Who is Vertex Bioenergy?
Vertex Bioenergy is a European reference in the biofuels industry, being a leader in bioethanol production in Spain and France. It also produces other valuable products such as raw materials for animal feed, electricity, captured CO2 and corn oil.

Vertex Bioenergy’s capacities are distributed among four production centers located in Teixieiro-Curtis (A Coruña), Babilafuente (Salamanca), Cartagena (Murcia) and Arance, in France. Its headquarters are located in Madrid.
What is the challenge?
The Vertex Bioenergy Challenge consists of the utilization of plant co-products from alcoholic fermentations, such as protein, for their application in the agro-livestock industry or in other sectors. The aim is to improve the nutritional characteristics of existing co-products or to transform them into alternative products for nutritional use or as biofertilizers.
Industrialized agriculture and livestock is one of the most important contributors to the world’s most pressing environmental problems, such as water use, air pollution and biodiversity loss. It is responsible for a very significant fraction of greenhouse gas emissions (impacting more than the entire transportation sector). Current animal protein production is very inefficient, and has a high impact on primary energy and land use. There is a growing need for the sector to have alternative plant-based protein sources that impact the sustainability, efficiency and safety of the entire production chain.
How to apply for the challenge?
Vertex Bioenergy is one of the companies participating in BF ClimaTech, contributing to the definition of the challenges and proposing specific challenges, as well as subsequently mentoring the selected projects. In the second edition, the Vertex Bioenergy Challenge is integrated in Topic 1 – Making progress on the circularity and decarbonisation of the primary sector: forestry, agriculture, livestock farming and fishing.
For your project to be eligible for the Vertex Bioenergy Challenge, in the corresponding section of the registration form, choose Topic 1 and indicate that you are submitting the project to the Vertex Bioenergy Challenge. Please note that the project will be evaluated, among other criteria, for its fit with the specific objectives of the challenge.
